The rifle was made in 1897 and has an unusually late refurbishment cartouche dated 1940, while most M91 rifles tend to have 1920's refurbishment dates from WWI damage. This date puts refurbishment either after the Second Italo-Abyssinian War or into WWII's invasions of Egypt and Greece. During refurbishment the stock was replaced and renumbered over the previous serial; there is a tang repair and small wooden plug repairs. Most metal parts appear reblued, except strangely the rear sight base was left bare. Also, the bolt appears to be a M41 bolt, as it has 30's-40's marked parts from FNA Brescia, HVM, and Rocca. The bolt was likely replaced sometime after refurbishment.
On the right side of the stock there is a cross-like mark, another line, and to the left of that what appears as very light illegible writing. On the left buttstock there are a few characters, perhaps initials, which I cannot decipher. They may be a stylized "LP," but if so the two periods next to them are incorrectly placed.
The rifle is in good condition. The bore is shiny with excellent rifling. There are no import marks, so the rifle was imported before 1968, but from which country is unsure.
